James F. Holleran, 91, of 794 King St., Northumberland, formerly of 11 Dennis Lane, Bradford, passed away, Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Born February 26, 1924, in Bradford he was the son of the late Francis L. and Ruth M. (Songer) Holleran.
Jim was a 1941 graduate of St. Bernard School where he excelled in sports. He attended college in Waynesburg on a basketball scholarship. In March of 1946 he was drafted out of college and into the United States Army. He served in France and was honorably discharged in August of 1946
On January 12, 1946 in St. Bernard Church with Father Reilly officiating, he married Beatrice L. “Bea” (McGinnis) Holleran who died July 18, 2013.
Mr. Holleran’s career started at Bradford Milk Company, then City Creamery, Bradford Meats & Provisions and he retired from Whitehawk Beef.
He was a member of St. Bernard Church, the Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th Degree Knight, the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans.
Jim coached basketball at St. Bernard School for over 20 years with Nunzio Marino and Donald Raabe. He along with Joe Bizzaro umpired the first Little League Baseball game played in the City of Bradford at the Mill Street playground.
Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl L. (the late John) Copeland of Lancaster, OH, and Carol M. (Tom) Thomas of Northumberland, and one son, James Michael (Donna) Holleran, of Castalian Springs, TN, 7 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, one sister Helen (the late William) Aylward of Bradford and Richard (Jean) Holleran of Dewey AZ, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter Mary Ellen, and one grandson Andrew J. Thomas, one sister Nancy Sutherland and one brother Thomas Holleran.
Family will be receiving friends on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 from 4 to 7pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, 372 East Main Street, Bradford, where a prayer service will be held at 11:30am on Wednesday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Noon in St. Bernard Church with Rev. Raymond Gramata as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.
