Donald M. Smith

Donald M. Smith, 97, formerly of 100 Bates Road, and Gilbert Lane, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Bradford Manor.

Born January 7, 1919, in Falls Creek, he was a son of the late William E. and Jennie (Starr) Smith. He attended Horton Township Schools.

On August 17, 1940 in Limestone, he married Betty J. (Wolcott) Smith, who died on September 27, 1993.

Don enlisted in the United States Army on September 2, 1943. He served in the European, African, Rhineland Theatre where he drove Half/Track. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars. Don was honorably discharged a Tech-5 on January 9, 1946.

He was member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Bradford Moose Lodge, Eagles Club, the American Legion Post 108 of Bradford, the VFW Post 2497 of Limestone, and was a Past Commander of the Limestone Legion Post 1560.

Mr. Smith worked as a tank truck gauger at National Transit Company for over 30 years retiring in 1973.

Surviving is one daughter, Beverly (Bill) Newton of Trinity, AL, three sons Richard (Cathy) Smith, of Erie, Larry (Vera) Smith, of Smethport, William (Diane)  Smith, of Derrick City, one daughter-in-law Barbara Smith of Derrick City, 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, one son Dale Smith, one great granddaughter Autumn Rose Smith, 4 sisters and 4 brothers. 

Friends will be received in Monday, July 25, 2016, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc 372 East Main St., where funeral services will be held at 10:00am Tuesday, with Rev. Seth McClymonds, Jr., pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Military Honors and committal services will follow in McKean Memorial Park.
