Silvis A. "Slau" Hervatin, 95, of Lafayette, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.
Born November 20, 1925, in Kane, he was a son of the late Joseph and Frances (Rolick) Hervatin.
On September 13, 1952, he married Eleanor R. (Bernhard) Hervatin who preceded him in death on October 4, 2006.
On January 12, 1944, he enlisted along with his brother, in the United States Army. While in the service his father passed away and he returned home, with an honorable discharge to help his sisters run the family wood camp. He and his brother ran Hervatin Bros. Logging until 1970. He then became an independent logging contractor. In 1983 he was a contractor for Pennzoil. In 1987 he began working for his son Charlie at his mill, Kinzua Forest Products, retiring in 2009.
He was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mt. Alton, and currently a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church. He enjoyed wood working and building furniture for his family.
Surviving are three daughters, Vicky (Avery) Nelson, of Lewis Run, Sue (Jim) Haines, of Napa, CA and Teresa (Jerry) Swartz, of Mt. Jewett, five sons Charlie Hervatin, Steve (Jessie) Hervatin, Dennis Hervatin, Frank Hervatin, and Joe Hervatin, all of Lewis Run, one brother, Joseph Hervatin, of Mt. Jewett, 15 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 54 years, one son, Mark Anthony Hervatin, June 17, 1998, and four sisters, Helena Kenneson, Zoranne Stewart, Rose Kaluza and Fanny Bizzak.
Friends will be received on Friday, July 30, 2021, at the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc, 33 South Avenue, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 11:00 am in Our Mother Perpetual Help Church with Fr. Jim Gutting, Senior Associate as Celebrant. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by members of the Honor Guard at the Bradford Legion Post 108, and the United States Army.
