John C. Egbert, 83, of Bradford, passed away at UPMC Hamot in Erie on Monday, January 10, 2022.
Born in Norfolk, VA he was a son of the late John Lewis Egbert and Louise Cecilia Nash.
John graduated from Lebanon Catholic High School in 1956. He graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, NY in 1961, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering. After his graduation, he served on merchant ships during the Vietnam War carrying ammunition for U.S Troops up the Saigon River. John then sailed ships for the United Fruit Company, Weehawken, NJ, through the Panama Canal and much of South America.
John began his successful sales career in the Midwest and then joined the family business in Bradford to work with McCourt Label in 1968. While with McCourt, he served on the Board of Directors for the Tag and Label Manufactures Institute, National Business Forms Association, and the Flexographic Technical Association. He served as President of McCourt from 1987 to 1998, simultaneously helping Avery Dennison develop the concept of the Fasson Store.
Locally, John served as a member of the Rambler Association at Bradford Central Christian High School, also serving in numerous other fundraising efforts for the school with longtime friends Joe Kelly and Bill Tate. He served as a Chairperson for the Buffalo Bills concession stand, the Golden Chariot Banquet and many other organizations involved within the school. He was a member of St. Bernard Church, the Bradford Exchange Club, Community Outreach, Reading Recycling Co., Pennhills Club, the Bradford Club, and the Bradford Gun Club. He formerly served on the board of the Valley Hunt Club in Lewis Run for many years.
He founded the “New Directions Team” with Tom Causer and Clifford Lane, they took seats as Commissioners in 2003 and served until 2008. He worked as a consultant for the Bradford Economic Development Committee during the creation and development of the Lafferty Hollow Industrial Complex in Bradford. He served on the Bradford Hospital Foundation Board as the Chairman of the Planned Giving Committee for nearly three decades. He was an active member of Continental 1 and served on the McKean County Republican committee through the end of 2021.
Surviving is his wife, Susanne (Bempkins) Egbert, of Bradford, former wife Judith (Fritz) Egbert-Yorkoski of Lebanon, with whom he had three beautiful children, two daughters, Liz Micek of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Kate (Rick) Piscitelli, of Shelbyville, KY, one son, Michael (Angela Altus) Egbert of Brooklyn, NY, one brother, Jim (Earline) Egbert of Rogersville, TN, two sisters, Jane (Lou) Luzzi and Mary (Tim) Reiley of Bradford, four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lewis Egbert.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, January 21, 2022, at 11:00am in St. Bernard Church with Rev. Leo J. Gallina as celebrant. Entombment will be in St. Bernard Mausoleum.
