Frances S. Nickel

Frances "Fran" (Stavish) Nickel, 84, formerly of 63 Southgate Road, Bradford, passed away Friday, February 4, 2022, at Bradford Ecumenical Home after a prolonged illness.

Born in Olean, NY on September 17, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Florence (Suchora) Stavish. She was a 1954 graduate of Olean High School.                                                                                                                   

On October 20, 1956, at Transfiguration Church in Olean, she married Howard W. Nickel who preceded her in death in 2001.

In 1958, she moved to Bradford with her husband who started working at Jensen Paint.  Later they purchased the business and named it Nickel Paint and Decorating. She and her son Greg operated the store until 2007.

Fran was a member of St. Bernard’s Church, Catholic Women's Club, Zonta, and Current Events Club.

Surviving are her four children, Paul (Becky) Nickel, of Ft. Wayne, IN; Linda (Larry) Hills, of Orlando, FL; Gregory (Jean) Nickel, of Derrick City, PA; Brian (Suzanne) Nickel, of Frisco, TX; 14 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings Barbara (Francis) Zaik, of Pine Knoll Shores, NC; Frank “Sam” (Jackie) Stavish and Mary Ann (Robert) Chambers, all of Ocala, FL and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a daughter, Elizabeth, shortly after birth in November of 1960.

Friends will be received on Sunday, February 13, 2022, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, at Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. located at 372 E. Main St., where a prayer service will be held at 10:30 am Monday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in St. Bernard Church. Burial will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY.

Aunt Frannie was one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met. She made everyone feel important and there was no such thing as a stranger. We had so many wonderful times when she spent winters with my parents’. She was like my second mom and I will miss her so much. My sympathies to my cousin’s for your loss. Fran was our welcoming committee to Bradford first when we were regular visitors and wallpaper customers and then when we moved to Bradford. Fran was all that is good about Bradford: warm, welcoming, genuine, interested in others, giving of her time and resources, and on and on. We can’t forget that her apple pies were top-of-the-chart!!
