Shirley A. Birtcil

Shirley A. Birtcil, 83, formerly of 665 Minard Run, passed away, Saturday, May 3, 2014, at the Bradford Ecumenical Home. She was a beloved mother and grandmother, and she has impressed lasting memories on both her family and friends.

 

Born August 7, 1930, in Bradford she was a daughter of the late John W. and Jessie (Sneath) Eidson.

 

On March 3, 1956 in Bradford, she married Max W. Birtcil, who died on December 2, 2001.

 

She was a 1948 graduate of Bradford High School.

 

She worked at Kendall Refining Company later at the Mental Health Office and prior to her retirement she was a case worker for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.

 

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she sang and played in the hand bell choir.

 

Shirley was part of the Oil Valley Cloggers and enjoyed bowling, horseshoes, square dancing, line dancing and attending the Bradford Senior Center.

 

Music played a significant role in Shirley’s life, the playing of the harmonica, piano, and even singing caused an infectious smile on everyone around her. Even throughout the end of Shirley’s life, music was a stimulus of melancholy, nostalgia and peace.

 

Surviving are two daughters, Terrie (Steve) Mascho, and Lori Ann (Troy) Johnson, all of Bradford, two sons Max W. Birtcil, Jr, of Glassboro, NJ and Michael Birtcil, of Smethport, 10 grandchildren, Dr. Deanna Mascho-Cawley, Tiffany Kibble, Devon Baumgardner, Preston Birtcil, Jonnie Mascho, Jessie Mascho, Kaylee Birtcil, Tori Johnson, Cody Mascho, and Jacob Johnson, 4 great grandchildren, one sister, Charlene Shannon, of Bradford, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Family will be receiving friends on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 3 to 5pm & 7 to 9pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. 372 East Main St., where funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Thursday, May 8, 2014. Committal services and burial will follow in McKean Memorial Park.

 

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Bradford Senior Center, the Bradford Ecumenical Home, the McKean County SPCA or a charity of the donor's choice.
