Ida Valjean Smead, 72, of Mexico, MO, formerly of Wright's Corner, PA and Hastings, Fl, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014, at Audrain Medical Center, in Mexico, MO
Born September 15, 1941, in Ridgway, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur James and Estella (Baughman) Work.
On August 30, 1963 in Gifford she married Wilbur J. Smead, who died on August 5, 2011.
Mrs. Smead was a 1959 graduate of Smethport High School and was named "The Einstein of 59" by her classmates. Throughout her working career she had been employed at Rich & Company, Corning Class Works, Kessel Construction, Micale Construction and retired from Minard Run Oil.
Many will remember Ida for he delicious blueberries she and her husband grew at their home in Wright's Corner. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and most of all loved spending time with family and friends talking about her grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Jodi M. (Bernie) Moore, of Mexico, MO, and a son, Wilbur J. "Jay" Smead, of Palm Coast, FL, six grandchildren, Timothy Smead of Palatka, FL, Sarah Collier and Matthew Smead both of St. Augustine, FL, Wilbur James "Jay" Smead IV of Palm Coast, FL, Christopher Moore and Allyson Moore both of Mexico, MO., seven great grandchildren , her two nephews she helped raise, James Russell ( Tina) Kerr of Erie and William Allen (Tracy) Kerr of Lewis Run, a sister, Mildred (Robert) Chase, of Erie, and a brother, Mervin (Rosemary) Work, of Girard, and many, many nieces and nephews scattered across the country. She was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Work and Joanne Morgan.
Family will be receiving friends on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. , 33 South Ave., where funeral and committal services will be held at 7:00pm with Pastor Eric Kessel officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
