John C. Slimick

John C. Slimick, 74, of 42 Lawrence Ave., passed away Thursday, October 1, 2015 at Bradford Regional Medical Center.

Born November 12, 1940 in Franklin, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary Jane (Croover) Slimick.

On September 1, 1962 at Charlottesville, VA he married Claire (Repass) Slimick who survives. 

He graduated from High School in Charleston, WV in 1958.  He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The University of Virginia, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.  He received his Masters of Science in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1969. 

He worked for a time for AeroJet in Sacramento, CA.  After finishing graduate school, he worked in Silicon Valley for several years and also at Bell Labs in New Jersey.  He switched careers and began teaching at Salem College in WV for a few years until moving to Bradford in 1983, where he taught computer science at The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford until his retirement in 2014.  During his tenure at UPB, he developed the Computer Science Curriculum from a 2 year program into a 4 year degree.

He was a member and former Treasurer of the Pennsylvania Chapter of The American Association of University Professors as well as the I.E.E.E. 

He was also a member of Church of the Ascension, where he volunteered for the Thursday Soup Lunch and The Second Harvest Food Drive and was a founding member of the Saturday evening service at the Wick Chapel at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.  

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Wes (Julie) Slimick; two grandchildren, Lauren Slimick and Sean Slimick, all of San Jose, CA. and a brother, J.R.  Axtell, of Beaver Falls

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. 

Friends are invited to call from 4-5 PM, Monday, October 5, 2015 in The Church of the Ascension, where funeral services will be held with Rev. Stacey Fussell, Rector officiating.  Committal services and interment will follow the service in the church columbarium. 

Memorial contributions, if desired, can be made to The Bradford Area Public Library; The Hanley Library at The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford or Church of Ascension Food Ministry.
