Steven A. Mahon

Steven A. Mahon, 58, of Bradford, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2016 at the Bradford Regional Medical Center. He was a loving son, husband, and father, who was proud to be called Katie's Poppy.

Born April 12, 1958, in Cuba, NY, he was a son of Ernest "Ernie" and Ginger (Tingley) Mahon of Cuba, NY. He was a 1977 graduate of Cuba High School.

On February 14, 1999 in Cuba, he married Jennifer L. (August) Mahon who survives.

On November 8, 1977 he enlisted in the United States Navy, and served on the USS Nimitz with VA 35 and was honorably discharged on November 6, 1981. He earned many awards in his navel service, such as plane captain of the quarter and year. He did quite a bit of traveling in the Navy and when asked if he had a bucket list said, "I don't really have one because I did all I wanted to do while I was young traveling the world with the Navy. Now all that matters is being with my family."

Steve had been employed at Empire Cheese in Cuba, Zippo Manufacturing and later at Walmart.

Mr. Mahon was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. He loved spending time with his family and especially his nieces and nephews playing with them, teaching them how to draw and just talking to them. He had a huge heart and an awesome laugh that was a joy to listen to.

Steve was an accomplished lifelong watercolor artist. He created spectacular landscapes and seascapes. He specialized in portraits of people and animals especially dogs. He loved being outdoors and playing basketball.

As Katie has asked you, "Poppy please paint the sky for us." We love you to the moon and back, and you will always be in our hearts.

In addition to his parents and wife, Jennifer, he is survived by a daughter, Katie Gorrell, of Bradford, three sisters, Yvonne (Luke) Radloff, of Cuba, NY; Debbie (Rick) Moore, Olean and Jody (Scott) Jordan, of Friendship, a brother, Mark (Brandi) Mahon, of Belfast, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two nephews, Lee Desmond and Alex Radloff

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at 11:00am in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc., 33 South Ave., with Rev. Raymond Gramata, pastor of St. Bernard Church officiating.

I had no idea what an accomplished man Steve was! He lived a wonderful life from the sounds of it, and, pretty sure "husband" and "father" was his proudest role. Many warm thoughts coming your way Jennifer and Katie. Praying for strength and peace for yous in coming days.

We will remember Steve as one of the greatest characters we've had the privilege of spending time with. His humor and storytelling made many a long trip seem like a quick drive across town. He lifted us up and other vets as well, many of whom were also feeling crummy themselves. One story about an experience at Cuba Cheese will not soon be forgotten by anyone who heard it. He spoke often of his wife and Katie — he was so proud of her! Rock on, Steve, and enjoy the snowy silence of the forest.
