Irvin S. Lyter Jr.

Irvin Spencer Lyter, Jr., 82, of 31 Vista Ave. Ext. Bradford, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, at UPMC-Hamot Medical Center.

Born May 7, 1934 in Harrisburg, he was a son of the late Irvin Spencer and Lottie Marie (McClintock) Lyter.

On October 11, 1957, he married Sandra Jane (Smith) Lyter, who survives.

Mr. Lyter was a 1952 graduate of Lemoyne High School. After high school he worked for NPC as a manager of the Planter's Peanut Store in Harrisburg.

He enlisted in the United States Army and served on the Border Patrol between East and West Germany during the Cold War, and was honorably discharged with the rank of SGT First Class.

Mr. Lyter graduated from Indiana State College (IUP) with a Bachelor's of Science in Education. He studied political science and economics at Pennsylvania State University and received his Master's in Education from St. Bonaventure University.

Irv began his teaching career in 1961 for the Bradford Area School District as a teacher at Floyd C. Fretz Junior High School. From 1972 to 1974 he served as Assistant Principal at Bradford High School. In 1974 Irv was appointed Principal at Floyd C. Fretz Junior High School and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1988. He was also a Real Estate Salesman for Upper Allegany Reality.

Mr. Lyter served on the Bradford City Council, the Bradford City Zoning Board and as a Republican Committeeman of the Sixth Ward in Bradford. He served on the Board of Directors of McKean County Visiting Nurses, the Board of Directors of the Landmark Society, Board of Directors and Past President of the McKean County SPCA, Past President of the Bradford Kiwanis Club, Board of Directors of the Bradford Children's Home (Beacon Light Behavioral Health Systems) and served as Secretary of the Board of Bradford Children's Home, member of the Northwest Council of Higher Education, former Vice President of the Jaycee's. He served on various boards at the Derrick City United Methodist Church and was a member of the First Presbyterian Churchof Bradford. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 108, past member of various educational organizations such as, BAEA, PSEA, NEA, and PA Association of Secondary School Principals.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Sandy, are two daughters, Martha Jean (David) Jones, Edinboro, and Ann Elizabeth (Timothy) Thomas Las Vegas NV, two sons, Vaughn Chad (Geraldine Miller) Lyter of Allegany NY, and Clifford Bryce (the late Cheryl Jean) Lyter of Emmett ID, 11 grandchildren, Kristen Marie Spears, Brian Spencer Lyter, Catherine Lynn Lyter, Jacob Allen Lyter, Jessica Jean Lyter, Sandra Kathleen Thomas, Schelley Moria Thomas, Paige Elizabeth Thomas, Jennie Kathleen Jones, Grace Elizabeth Jones, and Kerri Nicole Jones, 2 great grandchildren, William Irvin Spears and Annalee Jane Lyter, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Jennie Marie Lyter and two brothers George Harry Lyter and John Wayne Lyter.

Family will be receiving friends from 11:00am to 1:00pm, Thursday, June 9, 2016, in the First Presbyterian Church where a memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, with Rev. W. LeRoy Beckes, retired Presbyterian Pastor officiating. Burial will be in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill, PA.
