William H. Abbey Jr.

William H. Abbey, Jr., 91, of 1301 West Warren Road Custer City, passed away, Monday, April 30, 2018, at Bradford Regional Medical Center.

Born August 9, 1926 in Olean, he was a son of the late William H. and Geneva (Owens) Abbey.

He was the husband of Barbara (Bright) Abbey. They were married over 70 years.

Bill grew up in Port Allegany. He entered the United States Navy on July 25, 1944, he served aboard the USS Sitka and the USS Allegheny during WWII, he was honorably discharged on June 7, 1946. He was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon, and the American Theater Ribbon. Upon returning from the War he was awarded his diploma from Port Allegany High School. He later attended Lycoming College.

Mr. Abbey had been employed as a machinist at Dresser Manufacturing Company for over 40 years.

Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Pine Acres Country Club. Bill was an avid golfer and bowler.

Surviving in addition to his wife Barbara of 70 years, are three daughters, Suzanne (Tim) Funk, of Harrisburg, Judith Abbey, of Bradford, and Nancy (Thomas) Collop, of Atlanta GA, one daughter-in-law Amy Abbey, of Oak Island NC, one sister, Mary Lou Dann, of Smethport, seven grandchildren, Heather Tonneson, Abbey Nelson, Jon Abbey, Katlyn Salerno, Paul Collop, Cameron Funk, and Marie Collop, two great grandchildren Kailani Tonneson and Willow Tonneson, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Jon Abbey, one grandson, William Abbey, one brother Preston Abbey and one sister June Abbey Howard.

At the family's request there will be no visitation. Funeral services are private, and will be held at the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc., with Rev. Seth McClymonds, Jr., pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating.
