Richard J. Murphy

Richard J. "Dick" Murphy, 88, of Pocasset, MA passed away Thursday, April 29, 2021, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA.

Born January 18, 1933, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Earl and Marion (McAuliffe) Murphy, and brother of Elizabeth “Betty” (Murphy) Carlson and the late Dolores (Murphy) Rich. He was a 1951 graduate of Bradford High School where he played football.

On February 21, 1952, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served for 23 years and was stationed in Newport, RI; Norfolk, VA; San Diego, CA; and South Weymouth, MA. Dick also spent time in London where he had the honor of representing the U.S. Navy in a marbles competition.

Reaching the rank of Chief Yeomen, Dick received numerous honors, most notably, the Navy Achievement Medal and two Letters of Commendation. He was honorably discharged on August 15, 1974.

On November 24, 1961, he married Donna M. (Salisbury) Murphy. Together they enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. Dick was an avid photographer and documented their family trips to National Parks.

After retirement, Dick had a second career working for 20 years as a Mail Clerk at the United States Post Office in East Falmouth, MA.

In his later years, Dick enjoyed experimenting in the kitchen, watching Country music concerts on TV, road trips with his granddaughter and her husband, and tending to his yard. He also appreciated phone calls with his sister and friends, as well as trips to the beach with his beagle “Tulle.”

Surviving is one son Michael S. (Alice) Murphy of Centerville, MA, one granddaughter, Shannon K. Murphy and her husband Timothy M. Medeiros, and two grandsons, Sean R. Murphy and Kyle Jamieson. He is survived by his sister Betty Carlson of Greenville, SC, and his brother-in-law, Hugh “Bud” Rich, of Kane, their families fondly remember their Uncle Dick. Friends will miss his quick wit and “can-do” attitude.
