Bessie M. McCartney, 77, of Bradford, passed away on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY.
Born on July 26, 1943 in Olean NY, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Mary Elizabeth (McCool) Strait.
Bessie was a graduate of Otto Eldred High School class of 1961 and later attended a religious college out of state focusing on Missions.
On May 4, 2008, in Limestone, she married John C. McCartney, who survives.
Bessie worked for several places in the area including the Visiting Nurses Association in Bradford, the Department of Aging at the Limestone Senior Center for 14 years, she was the Justice for the Town of Carrollton for 10 years and retiring from Evergreen Elm in 2008.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Olean, the Red Hats Society, the Limestone Women's Auxiliary, the Rebekahs and loved to volunteer at the Ecumenical Home, Chapel Ridge and doing activities at the Limestone Senior Center.
Bessie enjoyed spending time with her family, going to Church, spending time at Allegany State Park, reading, looking at her flower beds, planters and rose garden, and getting ready for her favorite Holiday season, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
She is survived by her husband of 13 years John C. McCartney, two daughters, Carla J. (Thomas) Stone, of Limestone, Kathy D. Good, of Limestone, Step Daughter Marsha (Jim) McKinney, of Bradford, three sons Gene (Tammy Stuck) Work, of Smethport, Jeffrey S. (Melinda) Work, of AL, Wilbur "Will" C. (June Conner) Roberts, of Bradford, two step sons Elvis J. McCartney, of Bradford, Robert (Charlene) McCartney, of Limestone, two sisters Marsha E. Strait, of Port Allegany and SallyJo White, of Smethport, two brothers Earl (Linda) Strait, of Duke Center and Lloyd (Muriel) Strait, of New York, 21 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Bessie is preceded in death by her parents, previous husband Robert F. Burgess, one daughter Teresa L. Watson, and brother Fred Strait.
Friends are invited to a public visitation on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 from 11-1PM at the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Home, Inc., 33 South Ave. Bradford, with the funeral service to follow. Wade Robertson and David Clark will be officiating. Burial will be held in the McKean Memorial Park.
